Introduction To Air Pollution

A major source of air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels. Vehicle and factory emissions are common sources of this type of air pollution. Air pollution contributes to respiratory problems such as asthma, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and other lung ailments. Nitrogen and sulfur oxides in the air contribute to acid rain, which is a form of precipitation with a lower (more acidic) pH than normal. Acid rain harms forests, species that live in water bodies, and degrades outdoor statues, monuments, and buildings.

Types OF Air Pollutants

  • Two categories

            1. Primary Air Pollutant

Harmful substance that is emitted directly into the atmosphere

            2. Secondary Air Pollutant

Harmful substance formed in the atmosphere when a primary air pollutant reacts with substances normally found in the atmosphere or with other air pollutants

Primary Air Pollutants
Primary air pollutants (PAPs) are those that are emitted directly into the air from sources. Examples – Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic matter, particulate matters, lead, ammonia etc.

5 Major Outdoor Air Pollutants
    Ozone (O3)
    Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
    Carbon Monoxide (CO)
    Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
    Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5)

Secondary Air pollutants

Secondary pollutants harm the environment by making acid rain and smog. Acid rain can dissolve hard materials (rocks, buildings, metals). Smog poses a human health hazard. Greenhouse gases can result in global warming, which can change many areas around the world.

5 Major Outdoor Air Pollutants
Sulfur trioxide (SO3)
Nitric acid (HNO3)
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
SULFATE ION (SO4)
Trioxygen (O3)

Health Effects Of Outdoor Air Pollution

  • Short-term exposure to outdoor air pollutants can cause:
            Aggravated asthma
            Irregular heartbeat
Respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Long-term exposure to outdoor air pollutants can cause:
            Development of asthma
            Nonfatal heart attacks
            Decreased lung function
            Respiratory infections
Premature death in people with heart or lung disease
